City Urges Emergency Alert Subscriptions

Apr 13, 2018 | 6:36 AM

The City of Vernon is urging residents to sign up for emergency alerts.

The City’s Communications Officer Nick Nilsen says subscribers will get up to the minute information.

“That includes emergency alerts, news releases, even job postings, upcoming events, meetings, things like that as well. But of course, for the shorter term, our main concern is for people to sign up to receive the emergency alerts and news releases.”

Nilsen says the city hopes to widen the way it gets alerts out.

“We do have a request in to increase it so that we can actually give text messages as well as email responses. That’s a few weeks away before that might happen. But we do anticipate having that option available in the future.”

He says people are discovering it’s a good way to be kept informed when something happens.

“Actually in the last couple of days we’ve had a real flurry. We’ve had over 50 sign up in one evening. So,  that’s good. And that was of course a direct result of the coverage of the Eastside Road landslide.”

Nilsen says the system is capable of handling as many people who can sign up as possible.

Residents can do so by going to www.vernon.ca/subscribe.
