Regional District of North Okanagan Preps for Cannabis Sales

Apr 2, 2018 | 8:16 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is trying to get ready for when retail cannabis sales are legal.

The district is focusing on Electoral Areas because they can’t issue business licenses.

Board Chair Bob Fleming notes that the only way to regulate sales is through zoning amendments.

“So when regulations are made more clearer by both levels of government above us, both provincial and federal, provincial in particular, then some zoning guidelines could be put in again. It would probably be customized because they’re all different.”

Fleming notes Silver Star falls in Electoral Area C.

“You could see that they might not want to have people, you know, potentially renting or leasing space on the main boardwalk at SilverStar and having multiple outlets for retail cannabis sales.”

Staff are being directed to come back with amendments to prohibit retail sales of cannabis in all zones including home occupation.

“By putting in a prohibition, the feeling is that then you can deal with each case on a case-by-case basis until the provincial government regulations are somewhat clearer.”

Once amendments are drawn up, the Electoral Area Advisory Committee would be  arranging public hearings.
