Update: Senior’s Complex Working On Flood Cleanup; Levels Down

Last week’s flooding at Armstrong’s Pioneer Square senior’s home has left some of the residents there in limbo.

Eight tenants who lived on the lower floor will remain out of the complex for some time and are still not sure where they will live.

“We’re still in discussions of seeing where people would like to reside. We do have some available units in Vernon, see where they can be on the long term while we sort out the renovations and the plan moving forward.”

Noreen Gunther with Kaigo Senior Living Group, which operates Pioneer Square, says so far none of the residents has decided to move in with family.

A restoration company worked through the weekend.

“And so we started doing some remediation and drying out the lower floor. But we likely will not be doing any repairs until the flood risk from the spring is complete. Other than removing the damaged items and infrastructure there, we won’t be moving forward with reconstruction or evaluating our plans until that spring thaw has occurred.”

Gunther adds that no damage estimate has been made yet.

Kaigo is still working on insurance claims from last year’s flooding.

Meantime, water levels are down in Armstrong — which is a relief to residents after last weeks flooding along Meighan Creek.

Mayor Chris Pieper says the levels have dropped a couple feet, close to where they were before last Thursday’s heavy rain.

“But there is still no snow that has come off the mountain, so were still in for a spring flooding ahead of us,” says Pieper.

The mayor says the state of local emergency remains in effect, but will be discussed by city council tonight.

He says the declaration allowed the city the have staff on all weekend to watch culverts and for more flooding.
