Lumby Looking At New Animal Control Bylaw

Staff in Lumby have been directed to draft a new Animal Control bylaw.

Mayor Kevin Acton says there have been complaints of feeding wild animals and of people with too many pets.

“And also dogs on leash. Being that we’re creating some off-leash dog parks, we’re looking at making sure that it’s understood that in the village dogs will be on their leash while they’re being walked.”

He says there have been some reports of dog attacks in the past.

Acton says the old bylaw just simply needed updating.

“It didn’t speak to a lot of those things. It didn’t speak to the amount of companion animals you can have. It didn’t speak to whether or not cats need to be spayed, neutered or tattooed, which is something we’re still not decided on.”

When it comes to the number of pets a person can have, the bylaw will be fair.

“And we want to define what a companion pet is. Obviously we’re going to allow you to have three fish and two budgies, but when it comes to the amount of large sort of companion animals we need to have a definition there and some restrictions for sure.”

Acton says staff will take a look at what other communities are doing and work from there.

He says they’ve had some complaints about dogs running loose and one person with about 20 cats causing some issues for neighbours
