Lumby Gets Sandbags & Head Start On Flood Prep

Mar 20, 2018 | 10:24 AM

People in Lumby who think they might need sandbags for this spring can contact the public works department.

Mayor Kevin Acton says the village has received 48 thousand sandbags from the province.

“They would have been put together probably by a provincial team, maybe the firefighters or the wildfire firefighters. They’ve been delivered to Lumby now, so they’re here and available for residents and people of the community. I think they’re going to start actually putting them out at places where people will have easier access to the. They’re probably at public works right now.”

Acton says there are still some sandbags left over from last year that can be used as well.

Meanwhile, Acton says he and Chief Administrative Officer Tom Kadla will be meeting with businesses to remind them of their responsibilities.

“We’re just reiterating that although the village will respond in an emergency, you know, if you own a piece of property it is your responsibility to protect it from a flood situation.”

He says it’s better to be prepared now while the time is right.

“If you see a weak spot on your property, you think that there is an issue, you should address it sooner than later”

He adds that an assessment of flood risk and mitigation is coming.

“We still have the engineering group that we’ve hired to do the assessments of the diking and they’re assessing the property that we purchased coming into the west side of Lumby to see if it can be used for flood mitigation.”

He expects that report to be made public about mid-April.

Acton says the village still hasn’t heard officially from the regional district on a request for a release of more water from local reservoirs to help reduce the risk of flooding
