Coldstream Looking At Kal Pier Repair

Coldstream is working with the RDNO to take over the responsibilities on the insurance claim for the Kal Beach pier damaged by last year’s flooding.

Mayor Jim Garlick says Coldstream will repair it and it may have a different look.

“Whether it’s the original shape that it was, the new shape that it was actually, that t-shape. Because when the waves hit it it did have a weakness there. We’d rather have a discussion to make sure we don’t have to repair this too often.”

Garlick says he’s not sure when the repair work can be done.

“And depending on how quickly we can get somebody in a contractor to actually do the work. They were doing a damage assessment on it and determination of what needed to be done. So that information is still in process.”

Coldstream is also looking at the sand and whether it should be replaced.

Jim Garlick notes the sand that was laid down the last time the beach was re-sanded wasn’t very good quality.

“It’s very dusty. If you look at some other beaches like I say in the Okanagan previously. There is the possibility moving forward we could look at grass on the back of the beach in between the roadway and the water.”

That would leave sand just down near the front..

Garlick points to some of the beaches in the Mission area of Kelowna that work well for the public with a mix of grass and sand.
