Snow Melt Exposes Debris & Hazards

Mar 16, 2018 | 3:40 PM

Vernon residents are being asked to keep a look-out for blocked or overflowing catch basins and culverts as the snow thaws.

“Given the amount of snow that we’ve had and the potential for a sudden temperature shift over the next few days, it’s common for the melting snow to expose debris that has gathered over the winter months,” says City communications officer Nick Nilsen.

Nilsen says blockages that are causing a flood threat should be reported to the public works department.

“If you see something, please get in touch with us by using the links on the website (below), or you can give us a call at 250 545 6757,” adds Nilsen.

It’s also common for the melting snow to expose garbage and other debris such as drug paraphernalia like hypodermic needles.

Nilsen says the Community Safety Office will accept items like that for destruction as long as it’s properly contained in a puncture-proof container with a lid on it.

People are also advised to be careful with pets and small children near fast moving creeks, streams and water.
