Vernon School Trustees Hear Beairsto Parents On Crossing Guards

Mar 15, 2018 | 10:32 AM

The Vernon School Board has heard a pitch for crossing guards at Beairsto School.

Members of the PAC safety committee told trustees at their Wednesday evening that the intersection of 35th Avenue and 27th street isn’t safe for kids to be crossing alone.

Board Chair Kelly Smith says the board will take their concerns into consideration.

“When we have a presentation the board takes that information and then that item goes to the agenda setting committee to be placed on a future agenda. We can’t deal with it at that meeting because we don;t have all the background information. We certainly have their information but we don’t have the information from our staff. They did an excellent presentation last night.”

Smith can’t say at what meeting the matter will be looked at, but staff will get more information for discussion.

She says some research has to be done.

” We haven’t had crossing guards since 1985. We have to go way back in files to see why we know longer have them, what evolved, what happened that we decided not to have them anymore.”

Kelly Smith says the district has looked at using grade seven students but parents feel the intersection isn’t safe enough for that.

She says board members had some questions concerning crossing guard programs that may be available and costs.
