North Okanagan-Shuswap Trustee Responds To Abuse Allegations

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is being careful in how it responds to allegations of inappropriate touching of a young female student by an older female student.

District officials have met with the parents and expressed its sincerity of dealing with the issue fairly.

Official trustee Mike McKay tells CJIB News the safety of children is utmost

“We want our kids to be safe. There was a meeting the other day which I believe was a productive step into re-establishing some foundations. And the work continues.”

McKay says efforts are underway to establish some further meetings and reach a common perspective.

“There are little kids at the centre of this, very young children. We want to be supportive of them and mindful of what their needs are, first and foremost.”

Since the allegations were made, other parents have come forward expressing their concerns about student safety, bullying and teacher and district response.

McKay and other officials met Tuesday to talk about responses and protocols, taking in an overview of all steps to take.

“Anything that is related to bullying or children or anyone not feeling safe is of significant concern and that’s society-wide these days. It’s certainly in the spotlight.”

McKay says the District is also relying on provincial resources to provide expertise from outside.

He says it’s a work in progress but is at the top of the list as far as priorities for action and for making sure that the learning environment is safe and productive for everyone.
