Lumby Considers New Smoking Policy

Mar 6, 2018 | 11:58 AM

The Mayor of Lumby wants council to take a look at the village’s smoking policies.

The current bylaw bans smoking in parks, on the salmon trails and at bus stops.

Kevin Acton thinks with the cannabis legislation coming it might be time to ask the public different questions.

“About recreational marijuana sale, where they think the stores should be. How many, what type of stores, etc etc.  But the answers that kept coming back to me were we don’t really care, it’s going to be legal. Let business decide where it’s going to go.”

Council is going to hold off further discussion until it has the results of a survey of residents that will be done shortly.

“We’re look at the entire smoking bylaw again to see about maybe having smoking zones or just leaving it as is or making some changes. ”

The survey will be available online  with links to maps of the village.

“Very first question is: Do you want marijuana retail outlets in Lumby? From there, if yes, which zone would you like them, commercial, residential, industrial, does it matter?”

Proximity to parks and schools will also be addressed.

If council doesn’t get significant response in April , the survey will be sent out along with utility bills.

Kevin Acton is still to hear if the provincial government is going to designate Lumby an urban or rural zone.

Restrictions on where sales will be allowed will not be as limited in rural zones.
