Public Invited to Hurlburt Park Open House

The public is being asked to provide input on the City of Vernon’s plan for Hurlburt Park on Okanagan Lake.

The City took over ownership of the beach from the regional district on Jan. 1.

More than 700-thousand dollars of improvements are in the plans, including a new driveway entrance, lighting, and signs on Eastside Road.

Parks planner Susan Abbott a new 20 vehicle parking lot will also be added along with other amenities.

“The improvements we’re proposing in this plan are really phase one of the plan, and they would be completed in 2018, not likely during the beach season, but into the fall,” Abbott tells CJIB News.

Abbott says environmental rules limit what can be done along Okanagan Lake.

“We always have to make sure we’re compliant with the riparian areas — called the SPIA region — which is 15 metres beyond the lake shore, to keep it in a natural state. So it doesn’t leave an awful lot of room for improvement.”

Abbott says the beach is 331 metres long.

“The nice part of it is that on the south boundary of the park, it borders a lake access that is a strip of land owned by the City that is a road right of way.”

She says that adds another 120 metres of lakefront.

The public can view the plans and make comments at an open house at Lakers Clubhouse at 7000 Cummins Road tonight between 5:30 and 7:30
