Mission Applies For Summer Jobs Grant

Mar 6, 2018 | 7:55 AM

Vernon’s Upper Room Mission has applied for summer job funding from the federal government, but has an issue with a new part of the application.

The government requires organizations to attest to their respect for sexual and reproductive rights — including the right to an abortion.

Mission co-executive director Lisa Anderson says they agreed to that, but not without concerns.

‘It was a big debate. In the end I did apply. I contacted Kelowna Gospel Mission and the Salvation Army and our pastor, just to get a sense of what other people were feeling, and if other faith-based organizations were applying, and they were,” says Anderson.

She says they are hoping to get funding for two summer students which she says greatly benefits their summer programs.

“It really benefits our summer programs, and last year is when when we extended our hours, which worked really well.”

Anderson says the fact that other faith-based organizations were applying, helped in their decision.

The Mission is serving an average of 300 to 350 meals a day.

“At the end of the month, those numbers increase, just because people are trying to end’s meet. We’re getting more families in again, so more children,” states Anderson.
