Minimum Wage Survey

Mar 5, 2018 | 6:30 AM

A local survey of businesses on BC’s minimum wage had some interesting results.

Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce general manager Dione Chambers says their members were asked about the rate rising to 15 dollars an hour by 2021, and if that was too fast.

She says they had a good response with 110 people giving input.

“Sixty-three percent of respondents said they felt it would not have an impact on their business, not a direct impact. However a number of businesses did reply saying they felt that through their supply chain, they would see an impact,” says Chambers.

Chambers says most of the responding merchants said they’re already paying more than minimum wage now, so they are prepared.

BC’s minimum wage rises $1.30…..to $12.65 an hour on June 1st.

Chambers says a number of factors are impacting the business climate at the moment.

“What we’re hearing overall, is it’s not just one thing, it’s the cumulative effect. So it’s minimum wage, it’s the carbon levy increase, it’s MSP’s, they increased the corporate tax, so it’s the whole package,” Chambers tells CJIB News.
