More Owners Challenging Assessments

Feb 22, 2018 | 9:51 AM

The number of property owners appealing their 2018 assessments is up in the Thompson-Okanagan.

Tracy Wall from BC Assessment says it was a fairly significant jump.

“For the Thompson-Okanagan, the numbers are up 18 percent, so they went from 2,789 up to 3,288,” says Wall.

Wall feels the increase is likely due to the strong market activity last year.

“Where we were seeing 0 to 5 or ten percent increases last year, this year, we were seeing more like ten to 20 percent.”

Provincially, the number of appeals was down 7 percent from the previous year, from 28,383 to 26,186.

“Our appeal deadline was January 31st, and the hearings are all through February through March 15th,” adds Wall.

Property Assessment Review Panels hear the assessment complaints.  For owners who are not satisfied with a panel decision, a second level of appeal is to the Property Assessment Appeal Board.
