22 Groups Seek Share Of Legacy Funds

There has been a good response from local organizations to the chance to get 55+ BC Games legacy grants.

The city’s Director of Recreation Services, Doug Ross, says 22 groups have applied for a share of the proceeds from the event held last September in Greater Vernon and Armstrong.

“I think it’s fair to say the majority of them (applicants) represent organizations that promote active living for 55 plus citizens,” Ross tells CJIB News.

Ross says a panel will review the applications tonight and create a short list.

“By next week, we’ll make our final decisions, and then our chairperson, Bruce Cummings, he’ll be notifying the people as to whether their application was accepted.”

The actual amount of legacy funds will also be determined at tonight’s meeting.

“When we put out the information, we said we had approximately this much money ($50,000), so that’s why we didn’t give a specific amount. It’s my understanding we’re going to get an update on those numbers” says Ross.

The recipients will be announced at an event in March.

The original release put out by the City of Vernon in January, said grant amounts of up to $5,000 would be awarded to Vernon and area organizations.
