Simplifying Social Media

Feb 19, 2018 | 7:12 AM

Social Media is all around us but not everyone understands it.

The Vernon School Board and Vernon Secondary School is inviting people to an information session tomorrow night to learn how it weaves through our lives.

VSS principal Ken Gatzke hopes it will open dialogue between parents and their children.

“We’ll have students do a demonstration using different social media pieces like Instagram being one. Then after that the presentation is more talking to social media by our guest speakers.”

Those include RCMP and technology experts along with school officials.

Principal Gatzke says they hope to create an open dialogue between students and parents.

He says it’s important to be aware of what’s out there.

“Sometimes people don’t realize what they’re doing because social media is so easy to use and they make mistakes. But these mistakes can be catastrophic to their lives and really put pressure on them.”

Part of the presentation will include a discussion on the digital footprint we all leave behind when using the internet.

Gatzke says social media has both positives and challenges.

” A real fixation on it and taking over your life if your not careful. I think when social media is used appropriately with moderation it can be a really good thing but we need to learn about the pitfalls.”

The information session begins at 7 pm Tuesday night in the VSS theatre, is free and open to anyone interested.
