Pattullo Bridge Coming Down

One of the oldest Bridges on the Lower Mainland is finally going to be replaced.

Premier John Horgan announced this morning the more than 80 year old Pattullo Bridge linking Surrey to New Westminster is coming down.

“This bridge was designed in the 1920’s, built in the 1930’s and is well past it’s best before date.”

The 2 lane bridge was opened in 1937 and was only supposed to last 50 years.

Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says the new bridge will cost just over 1.3 billion dollars.

“It will be four lanes with lanes specifically there for cycling , for pedestrians on both sides so it will be a safe, modern bridge.”

Trevena said the new span will be built just upstream from the current bridge.

” And building should start next summer, summer 2019 with anticipated opening 2023 which is about the real end of the life span of the 80 plus year old Pattullo Bridge.”

There will also be smoother connections on and off the new Pattullo Bridge with new direct road connections between the bridge and East Columbia Street in New Westminster, and a new direct off-ramp from the bridge to westbound Highway 17 in Surrey.
