Drivers Seek Smoking Ban

Some transit drivers in Vernon are calling on the city to ban smoking in public spaces, common areas, and near bus stops.

David Hancock from First Transit told city council, they’re seeking a bylaw like one being used successfully in Lake Country.

“We also suggest including vaping, e-cigarettes, and marijuana plus any other source of harmful smoke be included in the proposed bylaw,” said Hancock, a member of First transit’s health and safety committee.

The workers want smoking banned within 7.5 metres of all transit stops.

Jenna Sealey told council, the big concern is second hand smoke.

“A poll was created on a popular Facebook forum in which members were asked if they would support a smoking bylaw within the city. The poll was in no way scientific or meant to be. Of the nearly 500 people who took part, only 20 percent voted against a bylaw within the city,” said Sealey.

The transit workers are seeking a bylaw that mimics one in Lake Country that Sealey says has been very successful, quiet, and self driven.

“Lake Country has found no need for increased bylaw officers to implement the bylaw, as it is complaint based.”

Councillor Juliette Cunningham has yet to see all the details, but says she’s willing to look at an initiative that has worked in other communities.

Council will discuss the request at its next meeting.
