School District 83 Considers Non-Teachers On Call
The North Okanagan Shuswap School District continues to look into the idea of hiring non-teachers for on-call work.
Superintendent Peter Jory says their proposal to deal with a shortfall of certified teachers, is far from a done deal.
“We’re going slowly and carefully. We haven’t got board approval yet. We’re seeing what those candidates look like. And there are some people in the community that have skills that can bring something to the system. There is learned people out there that want to contribute and we’d like to give them a look.”
Jory says while the story has generated media headlines, he says the practice has taken place in more remote BC school districts the last 30 years, including in District 83.
