Task Force Responds To RDNO’s Poll Plan

Feb 9, 2018 | 12:30 PM

One of the leaders of an effort to establish a resort association at Silver Star says confusion reigns with the process.

Task force co-chair Tim Dekker isn’t sure what to make of the Regional District of North Okanagan board’s plan to conduct its own poll on the issue.

“Honestly, we’re confused about what they’re up to, how they are going to do this, what they’re going to do, and we’re still trying to sort out what they’re after, because they really didn’t make a decision about what this poll would look like,” Dekker tells CJIB News.

Dekker feels even some board members didn’t understand what the poll entailed, saying there appeared to be “a lot of confusion on that.”

“So right now, I think confusion reigns,” he added.

However, Dekker says if the board is looking to get a better gauge on the support, it’s their right to do that.

Dekker says many of the property owners at the resort are from out of country, making the polling process more difficult.

“They’re here for their winter skiing, so now would be an ideal time (to poll them), but I understand this is a process and unfortunately, we have to go through it.”

RDNO staff have been directed to have a question ready for the board’s March 7th meeting.

RDNO chair Bob Fleming says a survey by the task force was fairly divided, and wasn’t representative enough of the community.

If a resort association is approved, property owners would be charged an annual levy to be used for marketing the resort.
