Tributes Pour in For Former Premier Dave Barrett

Former British Columbia premier Dave Barrett  died Friday at the age of 87 in Victoria.

The former NDP premier died after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, it was revealed in a press release by Premier Horgan’s office.

Tributes have been coming in from all stripes including the Premier who said “His visionary leadership and unflinching commitment to the well-being of ordinary people around the province led to lasting change that shaped our province for the better.

BC Federation of Labour President Irene Lanzinger says he was a bold premier for a bold era. Barrett’s government marked a political coming of age for our province,”
“His term as leader of BC certainly wasn’t a long time, but it surely was a good time to make BC a better place for working people.”

Green Leader Andrew Weaver said. “As Premier, he enacted bold, sweeping changes that touched on every aspect of life in B.C. Many of the reforms enacted under his leadership are still with us today, including lasting protection to our agricultural land through the Agricultural Land Reserve, and Pharmacare

Barrett was first elected to the B.C. legislature in 1960.
Barrett made political history when his left leaning New Democrats defeated the five-term Social Credit dominant governments of W.A.C. Bennett in 1972.
