Expanding Housing Ideas In Lumby

Jan 25, 2018 | 6:59 AM

Lumby Council has given 3rd reading to a bylaw that would allow expand the type of homes that can be built in the village.

Mayor Kevin Acton is excited about the prospect of allowing carriage and lane housing.

“Really speaks to infill, so there’s lots of lanes in Lumby and lots of deep properties with opportunities for carriage houses, laneway houses, secondary suites.”

Acton says it will be a good opportunity for homeowners wanting to put some investment in their property and create affordable housing for families who might be looking to move to the area.

“Encourage a bit more development  that might create some densification. The more densification there is the more people there is paying for the infrastructure in that area.”

He’s confident Lumby has the infrastructure to handle that.

“We currently have the infrastructure in place. We could probably skyrocket up to 3500 from 1800 hundred and not have to make too many adjustments.”

Acton says there are some areas being worked on for redundancies in the sewage system, but for the most part everything is in place.

He adds he hopes to meet with provincial and federal officials to discuss population growth numbers for Lumby.

He notes that the village and the Vernon School Board differ on that, which could have a bearing on the school board’s decision on what to do about Charles Blooom Secondary School.
