Vernon Road Crews Tackling Snow And Ice

It may not look like it right now but road conditions in Vernon should improve this afternoon as the temperature rises.

It’s been very slick all day, and the city’s Public Works Manager James Rice says road crews are going non stop.

“It’s actually a combination of plowing and sanding. They’re going to stick to main roads only until the snowfall stops. Following that, they’ll be heading into residential areas.”

The timing of the snowfall combined with the temperature was a challenge for the morning.

“When we have an event that occurs as early as it did, like right around 6 am, it’s basically about an hour and a half before rush hour and before the buses are really hitting the road so it’s the worst possible timing.”

Rice says typically it takes about six to eight hours to plow, sand and salt a road system following a snowfall.

Rice says there is a freeze expected overnight which could pose some problems for tomorrow morning.

” So, we’re going to continue obviously sanding slippery sections. Typically what happens is that you end up with a real cold snap around 4 am and the entire road system may freeze almost instantly.”

He says liquid de-icer and sand will be added but drivers are advised to be prepared for their commute tomorrow and take caution.
