New Day, New Record

Vernon is two for two as far as cold weather records this week.

This morning’s low of minus 11.8 degrees broke the area’s old record of minus 10.2 in 2003.

Vernon also set a record low on Monday at minus 16.4, shattering the old mark of 12.8 set in 1973, and the coldest Nov. 6th since records began 120 years ago in Vernon.

Environment Canada’s Trevor Smith says a warming trend will arrive in the next few days.

“The Arctic ridge of high pressure that’s been giving the cool, record-breaking temperatures is going to move off, and we’re going to slowly get more flow coming off the Pacific,” Smith tells Kiss FM.

Smith says the warmer weather will bring more moisture, with a couple of centimetres of flurries expected tonight.

“As we get into Thursday, were looking at daytime temperatures actually above zero, of plus 3, and then for the rest of the week, we’ll see temperatures closer to what they should be this time of year, with lows between 0 and +2 and highs between 5 and 6.”
