Captain America ‘Saves School’

It was Captain America to the rescue at a Vernon area school today.

Fire crews from BX Swan Lake responded to an alarm at BX Elementary on Silver Star Road during the noon hour, which led to everyone being evacuated.

Fire chief Bill Wacey says a student dressed as a Coke machine for Halloween put a box that was part of his costume on the cafeteria kitchen counter, which turned a knob on the stove and ignited the box.

“It smoked it up a little bit, (but) a young lad dressed up as Captain America saved the day. He’s the one who grabbed it and pulled it out,” Wacey tells Kiss FM.

Wacey says no one was hurt, and everyone is treating Captain America as a hero.

Grade 7 student Hendri Redelinghuys tells Kiss FM, he sprang into action.

“I saw sparks and I saw a fire. I yelled fire, and then I ran and pulled the fire alarm.”

Redelinghuys was wearing a Captain America costume at the time which led to fire chief Wacey calling his efforts heroic.

“It really made me feel good because Captain America  is my favourite super hero, and I have a lot of similarities to him,” Redelinghuys told Kiss FM after hearing the story on the radio.

Wacey says members of the volunteer department were at the firehall — which is just across the road from the school — getting ready for tonight’s fireworks show.
