Armstrong Thinking Snow

Oct 26, 2017 | 8:57 AM

The City of Armstrong is already gearing up for winter.

At some point, the snow will fall and Armstrong Council this week got an update on its public works budget.

Mayor Chris Pieper says the heavy snowfalls from earlier this year didn`t burden the budget much.

“Òur budget for 2017 ends December 31st. We don`t pass our other budget until the spring so we can almost do it on cost.“

Pieper says there is money in reserve for emergencies if need be.

In the meantime, staff have been directed to come back to the next council meeting with level of service standards for snow removal this winter.

Mayor Pieper says much of the expectations in the past has been verbal.

“We want good service levels. We`re not looking at reducing them or anything like that. But we are going to put them in a format that we can read and measure to.“
Pieper says the downtown and main routes are always cleared first before doing secondary routes and sidwewalks.
The city has also bought a bigger, better machine to clear all the sidewalks.
“We do all the sidewalks. That`s a rarity in today`s economy. Most communities have owners and business owners responsible for snow removal on sidewalks and we provide that service.“

There are over 20 kilometres of sidewalks in Armstrong and the plan is try to get them all done in one day.

The city does all of its own snow clearing.

Any contracting would only happen in the case of a major event.
