Grizzly Bear Audit Critical Of Government

Oct 24, 2017 | 12:02 PM

The provincial government is getting a failing grade from Auditor General Carol Bellringer protecting BC`s 15 thousand grizzly bears.

Bellringer has released an audit that says the Ministries of Environment and Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations have not fulfilled many of their commitments.

That includes a grizzly bear management plan and the implementation of a recovery plan in the North Cascades.

Also absent was an inventory and monitoring strategy of grizzly bears in B.C. and clear policies for bear viewing.

The report goes on to say the greatest risk to grizzly bears is not the hunt, but the degradation of grizzly bear habitat through expansion of development in oil and gas, forestry and human settlement.

Bellringer made 10 recommendations, including there be a review of legislation to clarify roles and responsibilities between the two ministries to reduce overlapping of responsibilities.
