Shuswap School District Discusses Trustee Election & Vaping

Oct 23, 2017 | 6:57 AM

Government-appointed North Okanagan-Shuswap school trustee Mike McKay has begun his process of developing recommendations for next year’s trustee election.

The working group on the plan began its meetings last week.

“The logical ones are either 7 trustees or 5 trustees. We’ll continue I think in the ward system, which is that trustees will be elected from different parts of the school district rather than on an at-large roster.”

He says it makes sense when you look at the expanse of the district.

“That’s because we’ve got very different and disparate communities as far as distance and geography. We also have really different population centres.:”

McKay says there will be a meeting with local governments throughout the school district November 21st

There will also be a meeting with First Nations Bands.

Meanwhile,  vaping is now going to be banned around North Okanagan-Shuswap schools.

Mike McKay says it’s an amendment to an already very good ban on the use of tobacco products on school district property.

“Just to add that into the mix because when the policy was developed that wasn’t something that was widely known or was a concern and we wanted to make sure that we’re covering all the bases.”

McKay says it’s important to ensure all of the campuses and workplaces are healthy and appropriate.
