Wellness Centre For Salmon Arm Secondary

Oct 23, 2017 | 6:11 AM

A Youth Wellness Centre is a step closer to being established at Sullivan Campus of Salmon Arm Secondary School.

North Okanagan-Shuswap School District official trustee Mike McKay applauded the idea from district officials.

“So the Wellness Centre is a coalition of service providers in the human services and the health sectors working with the school district to make sure that kids have access to some of those services.”

Those service providers would include doctors, public health nurses, mental health and services.

“For many students it will be a starting point and they will be able to get referred to other services or will be able to talk about and develop some of the strategies that will be helpful to them.”

McKay says about 20 per cent of students at the school are bused in and medical or mental health support is difficult to access.

The assistance will be available to the students once a week.

There are some grants the the organization that put this proposal together has applied for and is receiving so there is no direct cost to the school district other than use of our space.

The program is being administered by the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative and the Shuswap Local Action Team.

PIC : Monica Kriese and Dr. Richard Currie presented at the board meeting on Tuesday asking that Official Trustee Mike McKay consider the establishment of a wellness centre at Sullivan Campus of Salmon Arm Secondary.
