Asbestos Awareness For Homeowners

Oct 18, 2017 | 1:14 PM

WorkSafe BC is warning homeowners about the dangers of asbestos.

Vice president of prevention services Al Johnson tells Kiss FM, people with homes built before 1990 should talk to their contractor before any renovations or demolition.

“Homes built before 1990, and homes for sure from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, they can contain asbestos containing materials, so many products that were used contained asbestos.”

Johnson says asbestos is colourless and odourless, but deadly when disturbed.

It can be found in three thousand building materials used in older homes.

“If you think you have those materials in your home, the prior to any disturbance of those materials — prior to any sanding or breaking — make sure you get the product tested and then get it safely removed,” says Johnson.

Johnson says that process may cost more, but it will ensure the safety of everyone living or working on the property.

“If they have a pre-1990 home, they can go to the website thinkasbestos.com, and on that website we have a schematic of a home and it shows you where asbestos products typically are.”
