Lumby Says No To Smoking Ban

Oct 18, 2017 | 10:51 AM

Lumby council has rejected the idea of an outdoor smoking ban around public places.

But it was a split vote – three against- two for.

Mayor Kevin Acton says for those against the ban, the plan was just too restrictive.

“It seemed like their argument was it was taking away people’s rights as smokers. It’s getting to where you can’t even go outside in the fresh air where you could have smoked before. We’re now starting to restrict that.”

Acton voted for the ban.

“I smoked and I wish I never did. And it’s really hard and you know I started because I watched adults do it. So, for me, pubs and decks and patios where children  can go and have dinner with their parents just doesn’t seem like a place where we should allow smoking.”

At the same time, the mayor does understand the feeling that taking the current indoor ban outdoors would hurt businesses.

” I think it’s more about the legion and the pub. They’re already struggling. drinking and that type of public socializing has decreased a lot.”

He says those against the ban just didn’t want to put any more stress on those establishments.

Acton still thinks it’s time to move forward and knows the issue will be back before council at some time.

He also says the village is going to have to  have the conversation about marijuana to be ready when it becomes legal.

“We’ve restricted the growing of it into the industrial park, which True Leaf is looking at seriously. That may be something for Lumby as far as jobs and economics go. But while it remains to be illegal it won’t be in Lumby.

Acton says several people have approached the village to ask about a business license for a dispensary, but have all been turned down.
