Open Burning Of Land Waste In Coldstream

Oct 16, 2017 | 6:17 AM

The District of Coldstream has designated October 15th to the 29th as the fall burning period.

Mayor Jim Garlick says the weather is cooling enough to allow burning, but people can’t just go out and start a fire.

“First of all, they need to go down to the municipal office. They need to get a permit and then the permit lays out what they need to do as far as contacting Environment Canada to know what the venting index is.”

If the index is appropriate, they can burn on that day.

If it is not, they can’t.

” It means the ability that the smoke actually rises up. It doesn’t get caught down close to the ground. So what you have is updraft in the area.”

That prevents particulate matter from staying close to the ground.

Burning is limited to prunings and non-compostable garden refuse.

Garlick says the weather is still very iffy in the fall.

While it may be cooler, it may still be dry and the air patterns can prevent smoke from rising.

He says it’s better to do the burning in the spring.
