Vernon Allows Late Night Campfires

Oct 12, 2017 | 5:53 AM

Vernon residents will continue to be able to have a campfire after 11 pm — if they want.

The City was planning to put an 11 pm time limit on those fires in its bylaw, but councilor Scott Anderson successfully argued against it.

“It’s an intrusion by the city. It’s the city telling people they have to put their fires out at 11 o’clock. It’s an over-reach by a municipal government.”

Anderson says if neighbors have concerns about noise and smoke those are covered by other city bylaws.

“If you’re smoking somebody out, they can call the fire department or bylaws, and there’s a bylaw that specifically speaks to that. If there’s too much noise, there is also a noise bylaw so those are dealt with. There is no need to make people put out their fires at 11 o clock.”

The bylaw will be seeking final approval at council’s next meeting.
