Support For ATV Ban Mabel Lake High Country

Oct 10, 2017 | 6:21 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is supporting a ban of ATV’s and other motor vehicles in an alpine area north east of Mabel Lake.

Wildlife biologist Andrew Walker from the Forests Ministry is seeking the ban in the Joss-Tsuius Mabel-Mountain areas.

Board chair Bob Fleming says they will send a letter of support.

“They’re looking to step up restrictions in the alpine area because its high elevation and very slow to recover in the growth and so on, and I guess the damage has been significant.”

Walker says ATV’ers have been causing damage, gaining access to the alpine area through forest service roads.

Some hunters brought the damage to the attention of the ministry.

“It’s actually a process within their own ministry that they can apply to restrict access to recreational or ecological areas. Otherwise, Crown areas of the province are open,” adds Fleming.
