Traffic Help And Schools On Lake Country Agenda

Lake Country Mayor James Baker is confident meetings with government officials at last week’s UBCM convention were productive.

One of the top items was the need to address the Glenmore and Highway 97 intersection.

It’s getting plugged up more and more as motorists try to turn left to go north on the highway.

“So it takes a long time to get through the Ministry of Transportation for a long term fix which is to get traffic moving on the corridor at a better time and their main interest is the highway and not how it backs up municipal roads.”

Baker says Transportation Ministry officials he spoke with indicated they are willing to come and take a look at the intersection.

“Well, they certainly want to have a look and go through all the plans the previous government has done and see where they did it wrong and they’ll get it right.”

Baker says he knows there’s no quick fix but the impact on Lake Country residents is great.

The need for a middle school in Lake Country was another issue the Mayor took to the UBCM.

He says the District is in line for one and population growth demands it.

“It’s not slowing down as far as our building is concerned and we really do need to have that middle school or we’re going to be in dire straits for all of our schools in terms of overcrowding.”

Baker says it’s important to get grade seven students out of the elementary schools.
