Waste Disposal Fees

Landfill and transfer station fees increasing in the new year

The cost to dispose and divert waste in the North Okanagan will be going up in 2027.

Effective Jan. 1, the Regional District of North Okanagan’s (RDNO) landfill and transfer station fees will increase. This will be the third increase as part of a four-year rate schedule approved by the RDNO Board of Directors in 2024.

The change will see new minimum charges for disposing of a range of products, including garbage, which will increase from $10 to $12.

There will also be changes to the per-tonne disposal fees.

The full list of costs associated with disposing of and diverting waste can be found online here.

“The RDNO’s Solid Waste Management service is funded primarily through user fees, with only a small portion supported through taxation,” the Regional District stated in a release.

“This funding model reflects the principles of the RDNO Solid Waste Management Plan, which promotes a polluter-pay and user-pay approach. Under this model, residents who generate more waste generally pay more, while those who generate less waste pay less.”

To help cut down on waste going into the landfills, people were encouraged to recycle and reuse viable materials, and use their curbside organics cart or start backyard compositing for disposing of food waste when possible. More tips on how to keep waste out of the landfills can be found at the RDNO website.
