The vehicle sustained minor damage but the e-bike was totalled, and the youth was taken home by police.

The 13-year-old was then charged with numerous licensing and driving offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, which will impact their ability to obtain a driver’s license once at age.

The RCMP said this incident should serve as a reminder to parents that not all e-bikes are the same and some have different wattages, which places these bikes into different categories with separate licensing requirements. Police said many local youth were operating e-dirt bikes, which have the same licensing requirements as a motorcycle.

Prior to purchasing these devices for their children, parents should confirm the regulations within the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act to ensure the bikes are suitable, safe and street legal.
