Hollywood Road extension construction to begin in Kelowna

Construction is set to begin in early September on the Hollywood Road extension, a 2.1-kilometre transportation project connecting John Hindle Drive with Sexsmith Road.

The project is expected to improve access to the Gateway District, UBC Okanagan, Kelowna International Airport and the future Regional Transit Centre.

The City of Kelowna says the extension is part of its long-term plan to develop Hollywood Road into a continuous arterial corridor between Airport Way and Highway 97.

“The Hollywood Road Extension is an important investment in Kelowna’s transportation network,” said Chad Williams, a senior transportation engineer with the city.

Williams said the new connection will help improve mobility and network reliability as the city continues to grow.

Environmental considerations were also part of the project’s planning and design.

The city says measures will include replacement tree planting, restoration and enhancement of riparian habitat around Carney Pond, invasive species management and construction timing designed to avoid sensitive wildlife periods.

Environmental monitoring will take place during construction, while wildlife crossings will be installed to help maintain habitat connectivity.

During the first phase of construction, Hollywood Road and Academy Way will be closed between Sexsmith Road and Appaloosa Road.

Pinto Road will remain open to local traffic and business access only.

Drivers will be detoured to Hollywood Road and Academy Way via Arab Road and Appaloosa Road. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at Sexsmith Road and Arab Road to help manage traffic through the detour.

The city says the project is intended to accommodate future growth while limiting impacts on surrounding natural areas.
