RDNO urges preparation amid ongoing wildfire risk

Aug 18, 2026 | 4:56 PM

The Regional District of North Okanagan has urged people to be prepared as wildfire risks persist in the area.

The RDNO reminded people that Emergency Alerts are issued when there’s a potential risk, and Evacuation Orders go out when people need to leave their homes due to a threat to life and safety.

Even before these events occur, the RDNO urged people to take steps to be ready for emergencies

  • Write an Emergency Plan for the entire household, including for people, pets and livestock
  • Build Emergency Kits and Grab-and-Go Bags, containing copies of important documents, medication, and enough supplies to last at least three days
  • Sign up for a B.C. Services Account

More information on emergency preparedness can be found online here.

People were also encouraged to sign up through the Alertable App, and follow official social media channels and trusted news sources to get up-to-date information.

“We are not in the clear yet,” Shirley Fowler, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors, stated.

“North Okanagan residents must remain prepared and take action towards how they receive and understand emergency notifications. Wildfire conditions can change rapidly, and the best time to prepare is before an emergency happens.”
