Annual paddle up Kal Lake to support youth mental health services

The annual event that sees paddleboards raise money for a worthy cause will go at the end of the month in support of local youth mental health services.

The ninth edition of the Stand Up For Charity Paddle on August 29 will see sisters Kristin and Linsey mount their boards and travel the nearly 18 kilometre length of Kalamalka Lake in support of the Youth Integrated Services Hub (YISH).

Located in downtown Vernon, YISH supports local youth by connecting them with counselling services, closing the food security gaps, and providing access to other essential supports.

Operated by the Vernon and District Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, YISH’s Clinical Counselling Program provided 206 appointments for 52 youth between January and mid-July of this year alone. The services hub also supports roughly 300 youth each year through counselling, food supports, and connections to other essential services. This summer YISH had also been helping youth and families affected by wildfire evacuations through providing mental health supports and a safe place to access care.

“This year has been a powerful reminder that difficult moments can happen without warning,” sisters Kristin Holomis and Linsey Johannson said in a release.

“Whether a young person is struggling with mental health, family challenges or the uncertainty caused by the current wildfires, it’s so important they have somewhere safe to turn.”

In doing this paddling fundraiser, the sisters hope to raise $30,000 to support YISH and the organization’s work.

People can donate to the cause online here.

“Community support is what allows us to continue showing up for young people every day,” Julia Payson, Executive Director at CMHA Vernon, stated.

“Every donation helps ensure youth have access to counselling, food security, peer support, and the wraparound services they need. As we prepare for the opening of Foundry North Okanagan, these contributions help ensure local youth can access support when they need it most. We’re incredibly grateful to Kristin, Linsey, and everyone who supports this year’s paddle.”

Over the past years, the Stand Up For Charity Paddles have raised a combined $220,000 for local charities supporting women, children and youth.
