Evacuation Orders partially downgraded for east side of Okanagan Lake

Residents of select properties in the Okanagan Indian Band were able to return home Friday evening.

The OKIB replaced an Evacuation Order with an Alert for properties on the east side of the lake August 7.

The order was downgraded for all of Desert Cove, 32, 34 & 41 Antoine Road to Gottfriedson Road., all residents of Spotted Eagle Drive, Hawhola Road, Smitken Road, and Wilfred Road.

“An Evacuation Alert will remain in place and residents returning home should be ready to leave if the status of the fire changes,” the OKIB stated.

“If a subsequent evacuation is necessary, a new order will be made.”

Evacuation Orders remained in effect for the west side of the lake.

As of the latest update from the B.C. Wildfire Service the blaze was still estimated at nearly 2,600 hectares in size and was being actioned by a crew of 176 firefighters, 12 helicopters, 40 pieces heavy equipment and 105 structure protection personnel.
