RDNO urges cautious with ongoing wildfires, elevated risks

The Regional District of North Okanagan has urged people to be vigilant and prepared for wildfires.

The RDNO said emergency personnel and other agencies were monitoring conditions, though the North Okanagan remained very dry and hot and susceptible to a fire starting and quickly spreading.

With the high fire risk, the regional district wanted people to be cautious with their activities, and to take proactive steps to ensure they were ready for a wildfire.

“Safety remains our highest priority,” Shirley Fowler, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors, stated

“During periods of hot, dry, and windy weather, wildfires can develop and spread quickly, as we are seeing currently in our neighboring communities. We are asking all residents to have their go-bag ready, stay alert, and ensure their households are ready to respond quickly if an emergency occurs.”

Along with having a grab-and-go bag, stocked with essential items including medication and copies of important documents, people were advised to create and review a family emergency plan; stay informed of the latest fire activity; monitor emergency notifications; and follow all Evacuation Alert and Order instructions if issued.
