Salvation Army in Vernon will take its operations on the road as a heat wave hits the Okanagan.

The organization’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team will be sent out through the community to provide bottled water, nutritious snacks, and juice to vulnerable people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and housing insecurity as temperatures hit day time highs in the mid- to high-30s.

“Our priority is to help keep people safe during periods of extreme heat,” Teresa Durning, spokesperson for The Salvation Army Vernon, stated.

“Something as simple as a bottle of water, a healthy snack, and a juice box can make a significant difference for someone spending long hours outdoors in these conditions.”

Along with keeping people hydrated and fed, the EDS team will connect people with other community support and service providers.

Additionally, the Salvation Army encourages all residents to be safe during the extreme heat event by staying hydrated, seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, watching for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and checking in on neighbours and people who may be more susceptible to the heat.
