Shuswap River Management Not Settled

Opposing groups on the advisory committee for a Shuswap River Management Plan remain at odds over motorized boat access on part of the Shuswap River.

The committee’s report to the RDNO board highlights their differing opinion on what should be allowed between Mara and Mabel lakes.

The motorized users group wants a 50 k speed limit or 60 for those towing water skiers and no towing upriver of Tuey Park.

“Most of them on both sides do want to make sure that the environment is considered in that kind of thing but there probably are extreme positions on both sides.”

There is consensus on other issues including the need for a code of conduct for all users on the lower Shuswap and better control of tubers.

The committee’s concerns include safety, damage to habitat, disturbance due to alcohol consumption, trespass on private property, aggressive and disrespectful behavior, garbage left behind, congestion and dangerous behavior on the road in parking sites.

Cunningham says more discussions are needed.

“We’ll be going into consultation with the Splatsin and the Okanagan Indian Band as government-to-government to talk about the possibilities of any regulations.”

The board would make recommendations to Transport Canada which would be responsible for making regulations.
