West Kelowna wildfire held, suspected human cause under investigation
A wildfire that prompted evacuation orders in West Kelowna is now being held within its perimeter, but investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious and believe it was human-caused.
The fire burning in Kalamoir Regional Park remains contained Wednesday, with crews focused on extinguishing hotspots and monitoring for smoke flare-ups throughout the day.
Fire officials say the risk of spread has significantly decreased, but an evacuation alert remains in effect for hundreds of nearby properties as a precaution while crews complete mop-up operations.
The incident is now under active investigation involving West Kelowna Fire Rescue, the BC Wildfire Service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and provincial authorities. Officials say early indicators suggest the fire was human-caused and is being examined as suspicious in nature.
