Vernon Gateway Signs Up And Costly

Jul 18, 2017 | 7:05 AM

The new ‘Welcome to Vernon’ signs are now up and greeting visitors — but the project took nearly two years to complete, and had cost overruns.

Vernon Council rejected the original design of the signs, and there was also extra engineering and materials needed.

The final tab for the three signs on Highways 97 and 6 is $86,082, 30-thousand over the original budget of $55,000.

The sign at the Watson House required an extra 13-thousand dollars in materials and labour as a result of “the structural engineer’s requirements,” according to a city staff report to council.

Solar lightning was also added for two of the signs (Watson and Swan Lake), costing 11-thousand dollars.

On Monday, council approved the transfer of $27,299 from the development excess reserve, into the gateway sign project.

The signs replaced two of the former ‘Welcome to Greater Vernon’ signs which were put up several years ago by the regional district, only to see funding to maintain them dry up.
