West Kelowna driver fined after passing stopped school bus

Jun 10, 2026 | 10:58 AM

RCMP in West Kelowna have issued more than $725 in violation tickets after a driver was caught on video allegedly failing to stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

Police say the incident came to their attention after video circulated online showing a vehicle passing the stopped bus. Traffic Services investigators reviewed the footage and were able to identify the vehicle and attend the registered owner’s residence in West Kelowna.

As a result of the investigation, officers issued violation tickets totaling more than $725 to the suspected driver.

“We were able to identify the suspect driver in the incident and issued violations for failing to stop for a school bus and driving without due care and attention,” said Const. Gordon Carson of West Kelowna RCMP Traffic Services.

He added that stopping for school buses displaying flashing red lights is mandatory and critical for the safety of children.

Under BC law, drivers must stop for school buses with flashing red lights in both directions unless there is a physical median dividing the roadway. The offence carries a fine of $368.

RCMP are reminding motorists that failing to stop for a school bus is considered a serious safety violation due to the risk it poses to children.
