Vernon-Lumby MLA calling for more oversight of private wastewater services

The MLA for Vernon-Lumby has called for the government to support people in rural communities using private wastewater facilities.

On Monday, May 25, Harwinder Sandhu introduced a motion in the legislature to establish means to oversee and regulate these utilities in B.C.

“For decades, residents in Silver Star community have been advocating for oversight and regulation of private sewer utilities. Their concerns are not new and, unfortunately, neither are rising costs that they continue to face. At a time when families everywhere are facing global affordability challenges, rising costs and economic uncertainty, rural residents should not be burdened by utility fees that continue to increase without meaningful accountability or oversight,” Sandhu said in the legislature

“Our constituents shared with me that homeowners recently received another increase on their 2025 wastewater invoices following substantial hikes in the previous years. They described that financial strain many residents are facing as payment policies have also changed, requiring people to pay much earlier in order to receive discounted rates. For many households, coming up with thousands of dollars up front is simply not realistic.”

Sandhu said she heard from one resident who saw their fixed fees for private wastewater services increase by 36 per cent since 2023. She also said people in rural areas could pay around $1,300 to $1,500 for private services annually compared to the $400 to $500 people in nearby municipalities pay.

The MLA asked the province to explore long-term solutions that protect British Columbians from excessive wastewater costs.

“This motion calls on government to introduce legislation that would help to ensure wastewater utility companies charge fair, reasonable rates to their customers,” Sandhu said.

“The goal is simple but important — to establish transparency, accountability, fairness, stronger consumer protections for the people who rely on these systems every single day. I encourage all members to support this.”

In the legislature Monday, Donegal Wilson, MLA for Boundary-Similkameen, supported Sandhu’s motion, but asked that water services also be added alongside wastewater. The Conservative MLA said both water and wastewater are essential services and there should be oversight in how private companies charge their customers.

However, Sandhu said water services were already regulated, and the proposed amendment would be unnecessary.

The matter was tabled at the legislature Monday but was expected to be brought forward for further discussions in the fall sitting.
