Housing builds in Vernon down annually

May 26, 2026 | 11:16 AM

Housing construction in Greater Vernon is trailing a bit compared to last year.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said there were 10 housing projects started locally in April, bringing the year to date total to 56 projects.

Comparatively, April 2025 saw eight projects started locally, though there were 64 started during the first four months of that year.

CMHC said there were 113 housing projects completed as of the end of April, including 48 during that month. The agency did not have comparable data about completions from the year before.

Projects started in April of 2026 included seven row houses, two single homes and one apartment.

Kelowna saw a total of 113 new housing project starts in April for a year-to-date total of 692, both of which were down when compared to the previous year.

The Central Okanagan city had seen 878 housing projects completed as of the end of April, which was up on an annual basis.

Though housing construction slowed in the Okanagan, that wasn’t the case for the whole province.

CMHC said there were 4,679 housing project starts across B.C. in April, for a year-to-date total of 14,313.

Those were both up from April 2025 when there were 4,404 starts during the month for a year-to-date total of 12,089.
