Housing Policy Impacts

Vernon’s housing statistics resolutions at SILGA supported

May 12, 2026 | 10:44 AM

Vernon’s request for data on the local impacts of provincial housing policies will be moving up the chain.

At the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) conference, Vernon’s mayor and council brought forward two resolutions, asking for municipal-specific information about the impacts and effects the Short Term Rental Regulations and the Speculation and Vacancy Tax have had on local housing availability.

The resolutions were both supported at the conference.

SILGA’s process had been changed so regional specific resolutions would be brought before the province by SILGA staff, whereas resolutions with wider scopes would be brought forward again at the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference for further discussion and approval.

Vernon’s SILGA resolutions were deemed to be regionally specific, so would be forwarded to the province without needing to go through UBCM.

Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters he was pleased the resolutions passed and being brought before the appropriate ministers.
